“The Mixes” Series: Entropy and Order, 2007

Originally published July 21, 2009 on 710 ESPN.

After the wild success of my first entry in “The Mixes” Series — Feast and Famine — I’m back with part 2, this time focusing on my bookend mixes encapsulating the best tracks of 2007, affectionately known as Entropy and Order.

And if you hadn’t already picked up on it, I tend to use opposites in the naming of my mixes. Why? I have absolutely no idea, other than the fact that a disc of louder tracks and a disc of softer tracks seemed to beg for opposite monikers. And for the record, sure, there are occasionally “fast” tracks that might have qualified for the “slow” mix, and vice versa. Let’s face it: not every song is so easily identifiable as a fast or slow number. I’m just one guy here trying to make a living. (That, too, is wrong, seeing as how I’m not getting paid for this, at least not in the standard monetary fashion. My reward? The undying admiration of my peers. Or, if nothing else, maybe they’ll quit spitting on me so often.)

Looking back at my entries for 2007, and thinking that, if asked, could I have chosen what I considered the best release of the year, I think I’d probably have to go with either Do Make Say Think’s You, You’re a History in Rust, LCD Soundsystem’s Sound of Silver, Black Francis’ Bluefinger, or Detachment Kit’s +. Tough call, really, as I hadn’t thought of 2007 in those terms. I don’t know that as many great “albums” were released in ’07, yet there was an abundance of great tracks, as evidenced by the list below.

Entropy (The Best “Fast” Tracks of 2007):

1. The Octopus Project – “Truck
2. Animal Collective – “Peacebone

15. The Subjects – “I Could Never Tune
16. Ween – “Your Party
17. Wilco – “Hate It Here
18. LCD Soundsystem – “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down

And so we come to the end of my 2007 mixes, Entropy and Order. Next on the list is, of course, 2006, a year in which there was a hands-down, clear-cut winner for Recording of the Year. And that, good friends, is known as “The Tease.”

Until next time, have at it, you vultures!
