The “Music for My Ex” Mixes: Wicked Pissa Music, Vol. 1 & 2

So I lied.  That is, I managed to come up with one more entry in the “Music for My Ex” series.  In fact, this one was so obscure I didn’t even find it burned to disc, but actually found in on an old cassette in a cardboard box above my desktop.  What’s more, I found a bunch of old mixes from my cousin, Matt, and may have to do a series on them sometime, as well.  (Incidentally, he also puts together a fantastic set of year-end mixes, so who knows?  Maybe they’ll rear their head here sometime, too.)  This collection, too, is sans artwork, unfortunately.  At that time I wasn’t really creating cover art for tapes, but was instead meticulously writing down the name of every track (and every band) in tiny block letters on that lined, cardboard insert that came with all blank tapes.  My writing was so exact and clean you’d have sworn I was a serial killer.  And who knows?  Still plenty of time to figure out what I want to do with my life.

The title of this mix, Wicked Pissa Music, suggests immediately that I was living in Boston when I put it together.  Strangely, though, it reeks of music I would have had my hands on pre-Boston, so even I’m having a tough time placing it.  On the other hand, I was most certainly listening to Mass Romantic in 2000/2001, which would have been during my Boston stay, so perhaps I’m altogether mixed up (which would be shocking, I know).

With that, I have to apologize for some of the links below, as it’s not so easy to dig up YouTube video on bands like A-Set, North of America, or Arlo.  It’s a shame, though, because Songs from the Red Room, These Songs are Cursed, and Up High in the Night, respectively, are strong records, and probably won’t get their due unless you were, in fact, listening to them then.

Hope you enjoy this final entry in the series.  I’d like to pretend I’m not welling up with tears, but that would only be an insult to your intelligence.

Until next time, have at it, you vultures!
