The “Miscellaneous” Mixes: The Best of 2007

Um, yeah. Cousin Matt’s still not through with his 2009 year-end mixes, but that’s okay, Cousin Matt. No one’s judging you. Not that much, anyway. In any event, here’s Cousin Matt’s take on his Best of 2007 compilation:

So I half-assedly posted my 2008 year-end lists online last year. It was my first time doing so, and I’ve since enhanced them a bit. This year, I finally found some time to start loading in my previous Best Ofs.

Let’s start the reminiscing. Beginning with….2007.

Front cover – Top 12 Albums of 2007:

#12 – Let’s Stay Friends by Les Savy Fav
#11 – Asleep At Heaven’s Gate by Rogue Wave
#10 – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga by Spoon
#9 – Strawberry Jam by Animal Collective
#8 – I’ll Follow You by Oakley Hall
#7 – Cease to Begin by Band of Horses
#6 – Voxtrot by Voxtrot
#5 – Friend and Foe by Menomena
#4 – + by Detachment Kit
#3 – Sky Blue Sky by Wilco
#2 – In Rainbows by Radiohead
#1 – The Reminder by Feist

Matt and I share a fair number of bands on our 2007 mixes. Granted, Entropy and Order has a grand total of four songs in common with Cousin Matt’s mixes. Among the commonalities are “Yankee Go Home” by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, “Truck” by The Octopus Project, Rogue Wave’s “Lake Michigan,” and Spoon’s “The Underdog.” Granted, we have other bands in common, such as Animal Collective, The Shaky Hands and Vampire Weekend. Still, I remain floored when we have the same bands but we don’t have the same songs by said bands, particularly when it’s an undeniably great song we’re talking about. For instance, Matt’s got “Why & How Come” by The Shaky Hands. Fine, it’s a great song; however, how do you not have “I’m Alive” when it’s far and away the greatest track on the album?! Kills me.

As is always the case with Cousin Matt’s year-end mixes, this is a “countdown” as opposed to a compilation. (Again, Track 1, in this case, is his 41st favorite song of the year.)

Until next time, have at it, you vultures!

  1. Hi Brandon.
There is a lot of great stuff in here, like always. 2007 was a pretty good year. The couple things that I’ve noticed with the records is that I seem to have not liked In Rainbows or Cease to Begin as much as everybody else did (though both have some really amazing highlights), and I seem to have liked Wincing the Night Away more than most people did. It took me about 4 times through for the lightbulb to really go off, but I really enjoy that record.

Anyways. There are some great tunes in here. Some favorites would be, despite what I said about the record as a whole Cigarettes and Wedding Bands is a really great song. Actually, the top 4 of the top 5 that I know are all great and I’m on my way to check out the Menomena tune now.
